As the father of a High School Freshman and Junior, I found this video very interesting. It was put together by a Cultural Anthropology class at Kansas State University in the Spring 2007 semester. This video has over 2.6 million views on YouTube.
For me, one of the more compelling quotes was, “When I graduate I will probably have a job that doesn’t exist today”.

Hey Jay – great post. I’m a Middle School Technology Teacher / Community College professor (in addition being a Mortgage Broker), and the picture of students today presented by this video is spot on. It’s a bit old – but I still show my students this Video that came out in 2007. The facts are mind blowing to those who may have a rather narrow focus on some of these very broad issues. Keep sharing, and thanks again for bringing this issue to light!

Videos like this are not that depressing to me any more considering several factors:
1 – Kids these days are soo pampered and coddled that they think they are actually entitled to stuff.
2 – Are there any left that think they have to work hard to achieve things?
3 – We are destroying the planet already, so the quality of their education is minor in comparison.
I am trying to teach my kids the fundamentals of being a good person which are disappearing, but it is an uphill battle.
Well Marc, maybe the video isn’t depressing, but your comment kind of was. Education is of course still important. Educating the young people about destroying the planet and how they can help would be a good step.
The world is continually changing, the Internet is speeding up the process right now. These students are just reacting to their current situation. No doubt many students are more savvy and comfortable with technology than their instructors.
I understand that they may feel they are paying for an education that is delivered to them in an archaic fashion. But it’s important for them to understand that Experience is still more valuable than readily accessible information via the web.
In short…..Listen to your Elders!

The future will be here before we know it! I think it’s safe to say that most people have unrealistic expectations of what will be.

I am college student due to graduate in December. So I am seeing thoughts on discussed in this video on a daily basis. What I get out of this video is that students don’t think what is on the chalkboard is important because it doesn’t apply to the new business 2.0 format (as well as other things; college debt, not enough time to study, work, sleep, eat, etc. )
Students must understand that basic business principles are still very important. However, a new dawn is awakening, Business 2.0 (Blogs, YouTube Viral Marketing, Social Networking, etc.). Is everything on the chalkboard irrelevant? No.
But teachers & lectures need to educate students on Business 2.0 and how their Facebook profiles are business tools, how YouTube can be used as a marketing tool, etc. I think teachers are already doing this but teachers need to be better educated about these new technologies as well.
As for the other things, sadly… I agree with Marc (in a sense). That a lot of the younger generation work ethic is messed up. I do agree with Marc’s #1 & #2 comments, younger generations need to understand how to work hard to achieve things.
So very true. The rapid advancement of technologies is only going to lead to a whole plethora of new jobs. It’ll be like this for, well, quite a while.

as for the topic at hand, teachers these days have little idea of the changes taking place, so students are going to have a massive learning gap where they are going to have to educate themselves in a number of things.
This is a something big for are future. Students are coming into a world of technology.
