An email to “Windows 7 Tips” – Winner of ‘Most Asinine Comment Ever’

**Sigh**

I don’t know why things like this bother me, or why I waste my time responding to asinine comments left here. I know that (sadly) the world is full of jerks and bitter people and that if you blog long enough, they will show up on your blog and leave some ridiculous comment.

For most, I just brush them off and consider the source – realizing that their pathetic lives really leave them no choice but to demean others, that their own lack of integrity leads them to question others motives.

Others are far more difficult for me to ignore.

Some readers will remember back in November when one of my daughter’s high school band mates was killed by a drunk driver. Kelly Tracy was 16 years old and was murdered at 6:30 in the morning by a man previously convicted multiple times of drunk driving.

Earlier today, someone commenting under the name of “Windows 7 Tips” left a comment on this post. It read:

I have been very impressed with all the band members. They have been strong and supportive for each other.I hope you have made a contribution to our friends besides using this tragedy to draw more leads to your website.

This was the second comment on that post along similar lines. The first commenter apologized and I appreciate that. I responded in the comments to “Windows” but for whatever reason just couldn’t let it go.  I suspect it’s because Kelly’s death had such a profound impact on me. The pain has lessened over the passing months, and bullshit like this just stirs it all back up again.

So I composed an email to “Windows" and now I share it with you. I think there is a lesson in here somewhere. Maybe it’s as simple as “don’t be an ass”. Throwing off judgmental and baseless comments really serves no purpose.

My email to “Windows 7 Tips”

I responded to your insensitive and inappropriate comment on my blog. But I feel compelled to say more. Why is beyond me.

My daughter was Kelly’s band mate and was devastated when she was killed. My wife and I were volunteer "band parents" that day and were in the room when the kids were told Kelly had died. Regardless of what you think my motives were, I can assure you that being in that room had a profound impact on me. Clearly not to the extent that day had on the Tracy family, but how dare you say I wrote those posts to draw leads to my site.

I don’t need to write posts like that to get traffic or leads or clients. I wrote that series of posts to try to help the kids, to try to help the Tracy family, and to try to bring awareness to the tragedy that can arise from drunk drivers. And selfishly, I wrote those posts in a futile effort to help me heal.

Although it’s none of your business what-so-ever, yes I contributed time and money to the Kelly Tracy Fund. Did you? Did we work together at the Highland fund raising car wash? Did you drive to every other East Valley fund raising car wash and personally thank the parents and kids there and share memories of Kelly? Did you, and your friends, go to Serrano’s the night they were donating some of the proceeds to the Tracy family? Did you drive to the bank every couple of days to deposit money others contributed to the fund? Did you go to the impromptu memorial to Kelly at the school and cry and replace and relight the candles? Did you hold a teenager you’d never personally met in your arms as they wept in shock and grief that day (and in passing days)?

Do me a favor please, and don’t ever read or comment on my blog again.

For the dozens that left heartfelt comments, called, sent emails, contributed to the fund and said prayers for Kelly, her family and friends, I appreciate that from the bottom of my heart. I know for a fact the Tracy family appreciated it. I don’t want this one idiots comment to take anything away from everything you guys did. I know I should have just let it go, but some things need to be said.

  • Honestly Jay - this guy is clearly an ass. I remember when you shared this story with us and there's never been a question in any normal person's mind that your voice on this has been authentic and painfully real. I like reading you tell the guy to basically stick it for the same reason you find satisfaction in writing it. Sadly, I doubt it will make a difference.

  • I had a cousin killed a few years ago in a single-vehicle crash where alcohol was involved. Given the circumstances, I think your response was much calmer than I think mine would be were I faced with the same situation.
  • Spot on, Jay. I don't even think that comment would have made it past moderation on my blog - you've got balls just posting it, let alone replying to it and now a separate post.

People are jerks, there's no doubt about that. The anonymity of the Internet only feeds it, and I'm sorry you were a target.

A hockey teammate of mine was killed by a drunk driver when I was growing up, and I know the pain it causes. Sorry it had to happen to you and your family.

    All the best,

    Tim Ayres

  • Jay,
You were much kinder than I would have been.
  • Well said, Jay. I can't understand, for the life of me, why some people work so hard to be such an ass. W7T obviously has a PHD in that area, and I think your response to him was measured and well-delivered. It will be interesting to see if he heeds your request to not comment again. Somehow, I doubt it.

  • You're a class act Jay. Keep on with the good.
  • Jay~ It really is amazing the thinking of some people. Your response, in my humble opinion, was necessary and well said. Will it be received in the spirit intended? Doubtful. Tragedies like that are tough to go thru and unless you have, you have know idea what it is like. peace

  • wow, it never ceases to amaze me the lack of restraint some people show. We are in a sales industry, and therefore we deal with rejection all the time. We deal with people disappointing us by going behind our backs and using another agent after you have spent countless hours being their personal therapist during their house hunting. Only to be spat upon like a a low life sales man.. I have experienced the same frustrating comments on my blog. Questioning my integrity because I push people to buy homes, and therefore caused the mess we are in economically. You would be blown away what some guy called me.. Bottom line is integrity. And it the spirit of true integrity I appreciate you sharing that story, I hope all the other idiots out there who read this post will think twice before leaving another ignorant comment on this blog or any other for that matter. Good job Jay..

Small minds will forever think small.

Large minds will overcome small minds 98% of the time.

It's unfortunate small minds have to share their smallness. Whomever this unfortunate soul is...their smallness is only surpassed by their lameness.

Working through the 2% is not always easy, you've handled it directly and with the correct energy.

You sir - (IMHO) give an H of a lot more then you've taken - I'd mimic the contributor who shared "keep up the good".
  • I can understand you frustration especially since this person seems to be the insensitive out of touch person here. Good response and I hope this person gets over their pain as well.

  • You should be able to blog about things that are happening to you directly and not not have to worry about people degrading you for posting your personal thoughts and feelings. I hope "windows" reads this!
  • Jay, my heart goes out to the family and friends of this young girl. So very sad. It's such a shame that too many people type and click send before even considering the end result!! Obviously never listened to "mother's" great advise - if you don't have anything nice to say...
  • Yeah you were much kinder than I would have been. My sister was killed by a drunk driver. What a senseless waste of a beautiful life.

  • Much more gently put than what could have been said to "Windows 7". You are a class act for recognizing that a complete verbal barrage on this user (although it would have been well justified) was not the correct thing to do. I commend your dignity and wholeheartedly approve of your message, not only to this "windows 7" user but to internet bullies everywhere.

  • I can never understand how when you are dealing with a comment or situation like this that people sink to such depths. The death of a kid is unnnatural in the order of lifes events and therefore should be beyond the scope of cheap shots. My thoughts go out also to the bereaved family and parents of the child killed.
  • Many blessings Jay. This reminded me (with tears in my eyes) to pray fo the Traceys. I just wish those that DO drive drunk would actually READ blogs like this to make a difference.......as YOU are doing. Keep on my friend.
  • All I can say is that this person clearly does not know you. You have the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met.

  • It really is pathetic. Anyone who knows you and Francy, know how you go the extra mile for anyone who needs your help or support. It bothers you, as it does many, is because you care so much. Maybe the coward that calls its self "Windows 7 Tips" should use their time to help bring awareness to the number of lives that are lost to drunken drivers rather than accusing a caring parent of "trying to get leads"

    Jay,
I remember vaguely hearing about this tragedy on the news, and unfortunately we here so many of them, that we become de-sensitized to tragedies. Reading your blog post for several days, made the horrible senseless tragedy more real for me and I took time out to pray for that family in earnest. Here, as it is brought up again, I will remember to pray for them again.
  • It's too bad that some people are so mean in this world. Hopefully one day things will change for the better.
  • Thanks to everyone for the support. The good thing is for every one jerk on the internet, there are dozens of good folks like yourselves.

Several have asked, and no, the commenter did not reply to my email. Not surprising, that's how cowards and internet trolls typically operate.
  • (SIGH) - I just don't get why people need to be malicious - what exactly does that person achieve by leaving a comment like that? I think if we have learned something about this medium is to get to know people first before making assumptions about their lives, business ethic and intent.
It's sad that you had you write that - but know that the ones that really know you, know that you are a great guy, an excellent human being and an awesome friend (who watches your back).
Thanks for setting a good example on how to deal with these TROLLS

If you don't agree with this statement, you can tune in to the 6 o'clock news or just start a blog and after you get a decent amount of traffic, you will soon find this out.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Good for you Jay.

Invariably, I find the bigger the Jack*ss and the more resentment --the more those people really need a professional to help them (whether in a real estate transaction or on a psychiatrist couch!)

Its a shame this misdirected angst stirred up more pain for you. I hope you have found the your gift of your resources to all effected by this tragedy has helped you and your family heal as well.

  • What a shame people feel they must take their life frustrations on the kind actions of others. I am sorry for the pain that *ss caused by reopening the wounds your daughter's friend's death caused. You did a great job responding; I don't know that I could have been as civil.
  • Oh dang, Jay. I really apologize for that asinine comment that rubbed the wound Kelly's death caused. Too bad we can't have guard dogs on our blogs that bite rotten people like that. You gave us all a great example of how to deal with it though.
  • It sounded like W7T is someone that knows you in real life....are they? Have you figured out who they are? They should really be ashamed of themsleves for that horrible comment. You're a great guy Jay, and did a fantastic job of showing us all how to handle trolls.

  • What a sad and miserable life W7T must be leading for them to take their anger out on you. I would agree, people with questionable morals (or none at all) are usually the ones looking to find the worst in people, even where there is nothing to find. So sorry their comment opened an old wound, and I hope that all our support reinforces that you did a GREAT thing to share Kelly's story, not only for your own healing, but to get the word out about drunk driving and to help her family with fundraising. Hugs to your family and the Tracey family.
  • You know you have made it when you start getting the spiteful comments. Sorry it rubbed a sore wound, but you handled that hateful comment very well. All of us that read here often and know you in real life know you are a wonderful person through and through and were so sad to share the pain of Kelly's death.
  • I agreed that this comment would have not been approved on my blog. There will always be people who are insensitive to the feelings of others and who are lost in their world of thoughts. As for me I don't bother to even respond because by responding you might be giving them what they need "attention".

Living my life now as a father and having to see how my young children (11 months and mainly my 4 year old) deal with all the hate and mean behavior makes me sick. There are some really depressed and sick people out there.
