An Update From Lani

I received an email from Lani this morning, and with her permission am reprinting some of it here:

Update on family:

Eleanor is back to normal, she has a few scratches but seems untouched!  Aleisha is banged up but didn’t break anything- she was released last night from the hospital she was in so she could go see McKenzie in the separated children’s hospital.

McKenzie was moved from Pediatric ICU last night to intermediary care.  Her neck brace has been removed and there is no spinal damage.  There is a subdural hematoma that they keep doing CAT scans on and haven’t determined if it will require surgery or not.  She has a fractured left forearm that will be casted today or tomorrow after the swelling subsides.  McKenzie was ejected from the car so she is in the worst shape.  A group of gospel singers (moved here after Katrina hit their hometown of New Orleans) stopped to help the upside down car and found McKenzie still strapped into her seat but under the car face down in the mud.  She had to be resuscitated when the EMTs arrived because she wasn’t breathing, but she had a heartbeat.  We are told that without these good Samaritans, McKenzie wouldn’t have made it three minutes longer.  Thank God for them.  Babies are rubbery, so we’re told she’ll recover quickly- I’m already amazed at how normal she looks again since her swelling is going down in her head.

This is all good news.  We don’t have funeral arrangements completed yet, I don’t even know what day they are.  I may or may not be pretty absent from a computer until then, so I hope people don’t think I’m ignoring them.

Trust me Lani, no one feels you are ignoring them!

I had a conversation with Benn, Lani's husband. They are both overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. They feel guilty that they have not had time to personally respond to everyone. I took the liberty of speaking for the entire RE.net when I told them not to worry about that.

I am off to FedEx a check for all the donations that have been made up to this moment. It will be in Aleisha's hands tomorrow morning. Thanks to everyone who has donated, I *know* it is appreciated more than we'll ever know or comprehend. I'll continue to get donations directly to the family, so please help spread the word and help wherever and however you can.

Every single donation, no matter how big or small makes a significant difference to this family in desperate need.
