5 Investigates - What it takes to sell your houseIf you’re in Phoenix, tune in to Channel 5 News at 10:00 on Monday.

Find out if the Channel 5 video editors can work enough magic to keep the Phoenix Real Estate Guy from sounding like a buffoon.

It’s always interesting to see what these folks will do paring 20 minutes of video down to 2.

Maybe the whole dang thing will end up on the cutting room floor.

Regardless of how it turns out, it was a pleasure speaking with Channel 5’s Jason Berry.

Great news to be featured on the local nightly news! Can’t beat that for press I hope it helps your biz.

Well if they shot 20 minutes of film, you’ll be on and saying something.

Bite sized bullet points of information seems to be eaten up by the media.

“Bite sized bullet points of information seems to be eaten up by the media.”

Agreed. And I have a problem keeping things to bite-sized. The scary thing is when something gets edited to a bite-sized chunk and there is no mention of the “But…” that followed in the original interview/filming.

It’s actually worse with print media than with video because at least with video people can usually tell you were cut off mid-thought. Never an indication of that in print.

I have been misquoted a few times and then stopped agreeing to print. They can take just about anything you say and twist the words with some creative editing. Hope your news piece reflects the true nature of what you wanted to get across.

How did the interview turn out? From my experience with television interviews, they film about 20 minutes of interview and it ends up with about 30 seconds of actual broadcast time.

Interviewing with the press does take some training. Most real estate agents have not had this training.

Was it your first interview?

Glenn –

Won’t know how it turned out until 10:00 tonight.

Third time for TV, several interviews for print media. I actually prefer TV, though it’s true that the camera adds 47 pounds. I’m actually quite thin ;)

Darn it – I read the date on the post and did not read where you said Monday. I don’t need the TV camera to add pounds for me. LOL I just tell the camera man to show from the chest up. :)

Did get interviewed twice by two TV channels at the same time. Tough to answer two interviewers as they fired questions at me.

Jay, I just watched your interview on channel 5 about 5 minutes ago… yeh, I expected it to be a little longer… they sure gave some time to Russell Shaw. It’s a pity they cut you off basically in the middle of the sentence. I think it was a good point about doing an inspection before putting a property on the market… you have to have that competitive edge, so buyers would have a feeling of confidence and satisfaction especially in this market. I wish I could hear the rest of your interview :)

Max – I’m thinking if you sell 400+ homes a year, you get top billing. What they didn’t say is I was behind the scenes, coaching Russell on what to say. (KIDDING folks!)

“Pre-inspections” can work very well.

I wish they’d left in what I said about the seller needing to make the emotional detachment from their home and treat it like a business transaction, look through the eyes of the buyer, blah blah blah.

But hey, sharing air time with one of the top producers in the country is nothing to be ashamed of!

One thing I definitely didn’t like, when they showed a comparison chart of 2005/2007 and emphasized on the fact that today it takes 3 times longer to sell a property than in 2005. Well, DUH! – 2005 was the craziest year in the history of real estate market (at least that’s what local economists say). They should be more realistic and compare “apples to apples”.

As for the 400 homes a year… we are almost there – only 399 homes to go ;)

Yeah sharing time with Russell would be a little hard. I think that a follow up blog post about your spot and what they didn’t include would be a good idea.

Max is correct they should compare stats from a more normal year, but then it wouldn’t be dramatic.

Did they show 2006 figures on that chart? To see the marketing time change from year to year.

Definitely be rough sharing time equally with a high production person.

But still it was an accomplishment to be interviewed.

Did they post a video online with the interview? Would like to see it.

No Glenn, for some unknown to me reason they only compared 2005 and 2007.

Good job on getting the face time. There’s really no better publicity than being featured on the local news!

BAnne –

I just did something I rarely do. That would be delete a comment. Yours was completely inappropriate. I’m sure you can find a blog or forum out there where you can freely add your racist comments.

Greetings avid readers!

If you’ve subscribed to the comments on this post on the Phoenix Real Estate Guy, then you probably received an email that contained a very inappropriate comment from someone calling them self “BAnne Yonker”.

You have my apologies. That comment has been removed, and the IP address banned.

Unfortunately, there are people out there that tend to spew forth their vitriol on public sites such as this. Rest assured that person’s comment was relegated to its proper place as quickly as I could get to it.

My friend Athol Kay (a darn fine agent in CT) made a very appropriate reply to the comment, but I have removed that comment as well (with Athol’s permission).

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had to delete a comment like this (out of 4,000+ comments left here). I don’t like removing comments, but I won’t tolerate that kind of talk on this blog.

Thanks for your understanding!

Jay
