Our friend and industry icon Bill Risser is moving to Florida. Yes, really… ( insert sad face here )
To be honest, I wasn’t super surprised when he called to tell me the news. Bummed, but not surprised. When their son was done at ASU, he moved to the East coast. I’ve always known that Bill and Cindy would be heading that way one day to be closer to Kevin. I was hopeful that it would take them longer than January 1, 2017.
I remember the very first time I met Bill Risser. While I don’t remember the exact date, I think it was 2009, I do remember the meeting well. Bill was an “up and coming” social media expert / trainer / guru / escrow dude back in a day where social media was pretty new to most real estate agents. My good friend Calie Waterhouse and I noticed this guy offering a social media class via the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. Being a bit of a geek, I quickly checked him out online to see if he was doing any cool stuff that might be a resource to our business. I wasn’t super impressed with what I saw at the time, but Calie and I decided to go to his class and see for ourselves. A really funny thing happened that day. It was the start of a mutual respect and a friendship that continues to be something for which I am truly thankful.
Once Bill began to teach, people quickly began to notice the value he brought to the table. With his calm, no-nonsense style, he has a way of sharing material that is so much better than the average “industry expert.” You’ve got to give credit to Chicago Title for realizing what he was doing and for creating the position Bill pioneered in the Phoenix market. While several companies have now copied what Bill has done in our market, I have to tip my cap to Fidelity National Title in Florida who recognized Bill’s talents and hired him to come and do his thing in the sunshine state.
Good Times – Good Friends:
Since 2009 I’ve been very fortunate to work with Bill on a lot of fun real estate related projects here in Arizona. Frome real estate bar camps to the annual AAR Convention and more. Fortunately, our business relationship gave us opportunities to get to know each other outside of the “office” as well.
The fantasy football photo below was taken a couple of years ago at my home. Can you see how thrilled Bill was to pay up on a bet to our friend and partner in crime, Dean Ouellette? The top right photo is one of many I have from hanging out with Bill at the AAR Convention and countless other real estate related events we’ve attended over the years. The photo on the bottom left is from when ASU beat Notre Dame a couple of years ago. We’ve attended a LOT of ASU games together and that’s something I’ll miss a lot. The bottom right photo is a very special photo, and one I’ll never forget taking. I remember Bill saying that green means good. Many people followed Bill’s story here on the blog about his battle with cancer. He shared his life with so many, and we’re all very grateful that he has been cancer free for three years.
Bill Risser – Always A Phoenix Real Estate Guy:
Here at tPREG, we’re like family. We work hard and we play hard, and we take this blogging thing pretty seriously. Bill has been an amazing contributor to this site in many ways, and I am certain this will continue even after he moves to Florida. As I told him recently, we’ll all still follow / heckle him online, and I’m sure we’ll see him at places like the NAR Convention, Inman Connect, Bar Camps and other industry events. No way he’s getting rid of us.
The friendships Bill has made here in Phoenix will last a lifetime. I am sure I can speak for many of my colleagues when I say that we will miss having him around. While trading his Power Ranch home for a fancy high rise condo will be a little different, I have absolutely no doubt that he will have the same ( or better ) success in his new market. The super-cool Real Estate Sessions podcast is sure to gain even more listeners, his corny morning walks will probably continue, as well. While I am truly sad that my friend won’t be living in Arizona, I’m really looking forward to watching him rock the socks off of a new market. Our REALTOR friends in Florida are in for quite a ride…
