Happy Boxing Day!

Just wanted to send out a quick post to our friends and clients in Canada (and the UK) to wish them a Happy Boxing Day!

What’s Boxing Day?

According to Wikipedia (granted, that’s not always the best source), Boxing Day is “based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Contemporary Boxing Day in many countries is now a “shopping holiday” associated with after-Christmas sales.” It’s believed that Boxing Day originated in England in the Middle Ages.

Boxing Day marks the kick face off of the World Junior Hockey Championships. This is a big deal in Canada (think college football bowl season / NCAA basketball sort of big).

Team Canada is shooting for a fifth straight gold medal.

All I know about hockey is that it’s played on ice with sticks, nets and a puck. That, and four (or five) straight world championship gold medals and 11 golds since 1990 means you’re good. Really good.

I have to root for Team USA – the last team other than Canada to win gold (in 2004) . But if I were a betting man, my money would be on Team Canada.

So Happy Boxing Day, and good luck to Team Canada in “the drive for five”!

Ho - ho, it's funny!

I don't know much about hockey, but it's VERY exciting to watch a real game live. I had season passes for one of our local teams a few years back (Glacier Cats), but the team has since moved on. It's a shame really, it was quite the good time.

Hi Jay -

The World Junior Championship is one of the best (many would argue the best) in the world. Team USA has given Team Canada a run for its money in recent years.

The YouTube link I share is a shootout involving Coyotes' prospect Peter Mueller from a year and a half ago. Mueller is money in shootouts and it's easy to see why as he had the skills early on. Many of the young NHL players are featured here as well.

If anyone has NHL Network, they should be able to catch a few games. :-)

When I was a kid I thought people in the UK got into a ring with gloves! It was perhaps better that way!

Jay, this sounds like a good opportunity to suggest that you make a trip to the West Valley and watch a hockey game. It's a good experience and you can say you've at least seen a professional Hocky game.

According my neighbor, who is from England, Boxing Day is the day that the Lords and others that employed domestic help would box up the left overs and give it to the help to enjoy.

Just testing. Had a report of comment weirdness (opening multiple browsers). If anyone has a problem, please let me know!
