In Search of Customer Service Excellence

in Life, Random Musings

After the multi-week (and on-going) debacle trying to get a simple pair of eyeglasses from Nationwide Vision, I’ve been jonseing for a superior customer service experience.

Enter Saturday morning. I go to turn on the shower and SNAP, the handle come off in my hand.

“Great” I think. (Actually it was a significantly stronger word, not suitable for publishing on this PG13 blog.)

I am relatively handy with home repairs, but plumbing repair is at the rock bottom of my, “Let’s have some fun on a Saturday” list of things to do.

But I’ve only got two choices, attempt to fix it myself, or call a plumber and pay him $100 just to knock on the door.

I live about equidistant from a Home Depot and a Lowe’s. Not knowing exactly how to fix this shower problem, I need to talk to someone with a clue. The last couple of times I went to the Depot, I was not impressed with the quality of service. Francy raved about the help she received at Lowe’s for the re-tiling project, so off I go to the Lowe’s at the northwest corner Higley and the 60.

I found the plumbing isle and was standing there staring at an incredibly diverse collection of various plumbing parts and pieces.

Up walks Lyle. An incredibly friendly fellow and, as it turns out, a wealth of information when it comes to the nuances of home plumbing repair. Friendly Lyle spends about 15 minutes with us, explaining our various options and providing lots of little tips and tricks for getting the job done. No pressure, no hard sell just great service.

Parts in hand I leave confident I could fix the problem with a minimal level of cursing.

And 45 minutes later I’m taking a nice hot shower, and Lowe’s has picked up a customer for life.

I prefer talking to the folks at Lowes as well. I’m just thankful the post had more to do about the plumbing repair than the hot shower. :-)

Home Depot (long ago had such customer service) but there management made decisions to spend money enriching themselves instead of providing good customer service. The result is tons of dissatisfied Home Depot customers.

I have gone into my local Home Depot a few times over the last few years (when Lowes did not have what I needed) and wondered if the store was about to close. The people don’t care and the shelves are a mess. Lowes is always neat and it easy to find what I need.
I agree. Lowes Rocks!

Personally, I have never had a problem with Home Depot. As for personal preference though, I tend to like Lowe’s. To me, they have a better selection, are a little cheaper and the folks who work there seem more willing to help me out.

Lowes is beating HD up at not only customer service but the entire shopping experience. They started by appealing to women like Francy who then got their husbands, you, to visit and ultimately prefer to shop there.

Just shows to go that there are good ones around too. Whatever happened to the spectacles story?

DRS - check the post, I’ve updated it. Short answer, specs arrived on Saturday, in the wrong color frames…

Lowes is great. We didn’t have one in our area until about 2 years ago and once they opened they gained a customer for life also. They explain things and actually know about the products they are selling, amazing concept! One benefit from NAR that I actually have used in the past, discounted Lowes gift cards for clients.

I normally shop at Home Depot, since HD is based in Atlanta I just give them the benefit of the doubt about being the best. But, I may just give Lowes a shot because of your post here.
