More Powerful than Donald Trump!

The “Top Whatever” lists that pop up on the Internet are often interesting, and almost always controversial. Earlier today, Global Edge, a company in the UK, released just such a list in, “The World’s Most Powerful Property People – Top 100”, saying “The people in this are powerful because they work for (or in many cases, helped to create) the most authoritative real estate websites in the world”.

Many of the usual suspects made the list, and some you’d expect to see there did not. These lists always really boil down to opinion as there is no real way to quantify top anything when it comes to a website or blog.

Global Edge applied some metrics I haven’t seen done in this way before. Here’s how they ranked the sites:

This list was compiled by searching Google’s top 100 results using terms like “real estate blog” and “property news”.  In this respect it is biased towards English-language sites. We also searched the blog rolls of some of the biggest blogs in the UK, US and to a lesser extent the rest of the world to add to the list. It took us several weeks to compile a list of over two hundreds sites. We then used the SEOMoz Trifecta tool to rank the importance and notoriety of the sites most relevant web page.

Whether you agree or disagree with their methodology, there are two nice things about this list: 1) it is a great way to discover new real estate related sites; and 2) the introductory prose is an interesting read.

The Donald didn’t make the list. We came in at #40. Whether that lends or detracts from the credibility of the list is for you to decide.

At least my parents will be proud…

Congrats, Jay! It’s an impressive list and you made it “above the fold” (#40)! Well-deserved reward for digging deep in this business.

Congratulations Jay.

I didn’t make the list, but that didn’t surprise me. It was interesting that the list was very global. From Europe, to the far east, to Australia, and not just the US and Canada. That made for some significant and varied competition to get on the list.

Hey Jay, Congrats! So I had sometime on my hands, you rank second in “Do-Follow” Blogs on this list. Only one Do-Follow Blog Ranked Higher, but its written in German.

Thanks for the congrats folks, it’s appreciated. But really, check out some of those sites. As Steve mentions, it’s a global list and there is some interesting reading to be found.

Jay, congrats! I don’t know where you find the time to do all your writing and tech savy updating. Can I start a blog with nothing to say and just link back to you? Maybe I’ll get in the top 100,000?
Best Wishes Always
Greg

I’m confused, your post indicates you made #40, but then a following comment indicates you didn’t. Does that mean your company did, but you personally did not? #40 in the top #100 is pretty impressive! Good for you!

I think that list should have been called “The Top Powerful Online Property.” Someone like the Donald obviously is a huge real estate magnate — even in a crappy economy he still has several major buildings i the works — but he doesn’t have a huge online presence because he just doesn’t have to. But a company or person who is not already that notorious does need to develop a strong web presence to get noticed. I think it’s sort of an apples to oranges thing, personally…

@Todd - Don’t be confused. Just follow the link and see the list. Yeah, this blog is at #40. But that’s just one site’s opinion.

@Emily - I agree. Believe me, I don’t consider myself remotely as powerful in real estate as The Donald. To do so would just be silly. However, Mr. Trump does have a pretty good blog himself –> here.

While lists like this are nice for the ego, they really don’t serve much purpose — the exception to that being they are great for finding new places to read. And learn. And network. OK so they serve some purpose.

Not to mention another link back to your blog Jay. Plus the extra traffic won’t hurt either…who knows maybe the list will send you your next client.
