Nerd Alert! MIT shows “Six Sense” – wicked cool tech interaction device

From MIT’s Fluid Interfaces Group comes Sixth Sense, “a wearable device that enables new interactions between the real world and the world of data”.

This video is worth the eight minutes.

There are some interesting comments on the TED blog post about this, with some proclaiming it’s Big Brotherish, some saying it will never work, and others asking what is the point.

The point is, technology is advancing at an inconceivable pace. The amount of data already out there is staggering, and accessing that data is getting easier by the day.  If you don’t think information and access to that information is life changing, you may want to step out from under your rock.

One commenter claimed “high speed internet isn’t fast enough for something like this”.

What, you think that isn’t going to change in the next 1, 5, 10, 20 years? Heck, the Internet as we know it didn’t even exist 20 years ago. In the mid 80s, I fired up a 4.77 megahertz PC with 640K of memory and a 10 meg hard drive and logged onto Compuserve with a 300 baud dial up modem. I can read faster than 300 baud can deliver text. In high school, we used an acoustic coupler to connect a terminal to a mainframe and stored stuff on punched tape. In my freshman year in college I wrote simple programs in FORTRAN and carried around a box of punch cards. (I still remember dropping that box full of cards and watching my program blow down Guadalupe Street in Austin. Where the hell were thumb drives then? Or even floppy disks?)

OK, so maybe at 48 years old, I’m a fossil.

Fossilized or not, I can see that technology is changing the world as we know if. If you have kids, watch how they use and interact with PCs, gaming consoles, and the like. Think about what they know at their age compared to what you knew at the same age. Think about what a device like MITs Sixth Sense could do.

It’s mind boggling.

I'm not big on sitting through long YouTube videos; however, that one is well worth it-what an amazing technical gadget!

From punch cards to a "Six Sense" device...technology sure has grown with the speed of light; I can't even imagine what our grandkids will have. I'm really impressed with the "Six Sense", do you know when they are planning on having it on the maket? At $300 that is well worth the investment!

A super long video, but just amazing technology to see! It will be neat to see the final version, what size it is and if they really are able to keep the price tag under $300. The "Six Sense" is a really amazing technical gadget.

This is so neat! I am excited to see what the future brings to the table. Thanks for the post!

I am in amazement of the "Sixth Sense". I wonder if that would lead to ads poping up that are directly based on what you buy and enjoy when you look at screens...WOW. The future truely is coming quickly; and just about the time I finally was feeling like I had all the newest technology learned, they make up new gadgets like this to make me feel behind again! Lol!

You are so right; the internet we have now won't even exist in a few years, there will be something totally new. The young man that created the "Sixth Sense" probably never HAD to find a program from the DOS shell, though I'm sure he could if he wanted...that is truly the most amazing device.

It seems like as soon as I get caught up, I realize I'm behind again. The changes happen so quickly and it seems now at an accelerated pace and level. We really are entering into the era of The Jetsons!

One of my teacher's made a great comment, so I can't take credit for it, but it is an observation that may have a lot of truth to it.

"Someday, we will only be as smart as the data plan that we can afford."

Who knows if that's good or not, but personally I think its kinda freaky.

That is unreal Jay. I can't believe that they could put a product out like that for the price of a cell phone. I want one already :)

If I could develop a 6th sense to know if my buyer/seller is serious or not, that would be most excellent. ;)

I welcome it all until it comes time to directly interface my brain with the computer, then I opt out. For some reason, the idea of integrating my senses with a computer makes me feel vulnerable.

This is a neat video, I saw it several months ago. Technology has come a long way, and just imagine where it is headed now. Lets consider this things we do called blogging? Where do you think this is going to take us? Open source networks? I remember being in High School not too long ago, and I had a pager. I graduated from high school in 1999 so 10 years ago.. So that means in 10 years cell phones have become what they are today, I am not addicted to my blackberry, I blog through my phone, I twitter, and I check my facebook all the time. What do I think it will be like in another 10 years? WOW>>> All of these technologies continue to change the face of business. Real Estate for example is completely different. I can send a real estate purchase contract to a buyer or seller through my phone while I am riding my mountain bike in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah..I can be rock climbing along one of the many mountains Salt Lake City has to offer, and be working the entire time.,. This is the American Dream.. Go MIT GEEK>>

Have you ever seen the movie "Minority Report"? Walking into a store and advertisers scanning your eyes knowing that purchase soda a lot, then Pepsi and Coke ads pop up on screens as you walk by! Just like you said "the Internet as we know it didn’t even exist 20 years ago" just imagine 5 years from now... unfathomable

Wow. This is pretty exciting stuff. When I made the switch from a Blackberry Pearl to an Iphone 3G it changed my life because I now have the internet at my fingertips with high speed and a decent display(Same goes for the Storm now). I can see how this would take that even further. It's amazing how much technology changes overnight. I just hope they come out with something a little more stylish then the contraption she had around her neck!

WOW... That was awesome, Thanks for sharing... We went to a robot exhibit last year at MIT, what cool stuff it was... It's amazing how these new gadgits are changing the way we live our lives... Great post Jay!

Unlike computers, humans don't have the capacity to add RAM to our systems in order to keep pace with the amount of data that we are having to process internally. We both know what happens to a computer when you overload it with processing requirements. It is for this reason, that I think that the world is facing unprecedented levels of stress.

Unfortunately the medical community has yet to discover the human "re-boot" button, although Starbucks is on the verge.

The Sixth Sense will be my best friend when it comes out to public use! $300 dollars and it can tell me if my flight is delayed or the time if I forget my watch..or even what keywords might pop up when I meet a new person...simply mind boggling what is comig down the line technology wise. Just think of what our kids will be doing when they are our ages!
