Off to Broker’s License School…

in On Being a Real Estate Agent

Tomorrow I start six weeks of brokers licensing classes. 6:30 – 10:00pm four days a week. I'm hoping it's not as tortuous as the sales licensing class.

The Arizona School of Real Estate has two campuses — one five miles away from me in Gilbert, the other one is located 26 miles away in Scottsdale. Naturally, the brokers classes are only offered in Scottsdale…

There is a plethora of "alphabet soup" designations available for real estate agents. Personally I think the "designation" of Broker may be more valuable than the lot. Besides, it's easier to fit, "Jay Thompson, Broker" on a business card than, "Jay Thompson, ABR, ABRM, ALC, CCIM, CIPS, CPM, CRB, CRS, CRE,  GRI, PMN, RCC, RAA, SRES, SIOR, e-PRO, RSPS, TRC". . .

I'll try to share here any tidbits of info I glean from my studies.  Hopefully there will be useful information for those interested in real estate, as well as real estate consumers and RE professionals.

Good on ya! I don’t think the classes were any harder, and I know the test was not. But people will take you more seriously, especially at SEVRAR, the AAR and the ADRE.

I did it last December. A few of the teachers are spectacular. One was terrible. You’ll know who he is within the first 10 minutes. He taught 2 classes and they were pure purgatory.

The material itself was essentially the same as the saleperson classes.

The best part by far was getting to know some of the other students and becoming friends.

One guy knew my email newsletters! I felt like a rock star.

Your 6 weeks will be fun and when you’re done you’ll be more credible and respected.

Good luck.

Jay – Congrats. I assumed you were already a Broker. The Broker school wasn’t bad at all. Having Broker behind your name is a good feeling.

Hope you’re enjoying broker school Jay. I too got my Broker’s license in lieu of the “plethora” of Realtor titles. I’ve always wondered if the designations would really increase my marketability or expand my network. I guess anything extra puts you ahead.I am satisfied with Broker Associate!

Jay I remember you used to live in Austin. Did you get a real estate license in Texas. It would be interesting to compare how difficult the 2 tests were. I got my brokers license awhile back. The test seemed pretty similar to the salesperson test.

AREB – I never took the exam in Texas. It would be interesting to compare the two tests. I didn’t find the licensing exam here terribly difficult. Tedious yes, with many questions worded for seemingly no other purpose than to trip you up. I suspect the same for the broker’s exam.
