Photo Radar Gone Bad: Scottsdale Dismisses 589 Photo Radar Speeding Tickets

Scottsdale Bad Photo Radar SiteIf you got a photo radar speeding ticket at the intersection of Shea Boulevard and 120th Street in Scottsdale between December 7 and January 4, today is your lucky day.

A malfunctioning sensor in the photo radar system has caused the City of Scottsdale to toss out 589 speeding citations. The 35 upstanding citizens that already paid fines or traffic school fees will be refunded.

The bad sensor was in one of the eastbound lanes — attempting to nab all you people flying out to Fountain Hills.

Citations are being dismissed for drivers clocked at more than 11 MPH over the limit.

The news story doesn’t mention if those traveling westbound (on Shea) will also have their tickets dismissed.

The impact to the City of Scottsdale coffers has yet to be determined. Fines for speeding 9 mph over the limit range from $165 to $210 per citation. (And I betcha someone got clocked going WAY more than 9 MPH over…)

WARNING! The sensors have been repaired and cameras are back in service!

In Tucson we have the photo radar’s as well what a joke those are but I guess they will get people to slow down one way or another.

We are just starting to see this kind of technology in our neck of the woods - so far no refunds or issues - my bet is a lot of people will be pretty happy about this.

Jay, It was funny to read this article as I remember getting “flashed” on the 101 a couple weeks ago and looking down at my speedometer thinking it must be somebody else, but then again no one was flying by.

Having had my photo taken on City of Scottsdale streets (beware of Chaparral Road and also Shea Blvd.) a couple of times over the past 7 or so years, I will say that attending the resulting 8 hours of traffic school (in lieu of the fine) has made me a much more conscious driver.

why couldn’t the sensor on the 101 have gone bad last year when I got nailed? :-(
