RSS, Blogs, Social Networks and Wiki’s — In Plain English

As I work with real estate agents of varying technical experience, the same fundamental questions keep popping up. Chiefly they are: What are these things? “Things” being RSS, Blogs, Social Networks and Wiki’s.

And the folks at Common Craft seem to have the best answers. They produce some excellent short videos that explain the fundamentals in plain English — far more concisely than my often rambling answers.

So without further ado…

What is RSS?

What is a Blog?

What are Social Networks?

What is a Wiki?

We always appreciate your comments! Phoenix Real Estate Guy uses two commenting systems, Facebook and LiveFyre. LiveFyre is the most robust system (and easy to use!). It allows you to login with Twitter, Facebook, Google+ LinkedIn, OpenId, LiveFyre and as a "Guest". I recommend getting a LiveFyre account, it has some great features (just click the LiveFyre button when you write your comment).

BLOG COMMENT POLICY: We respectfully ask that you use your real name (first name only is fine) and not use keywords (Why no keywords?). The only real "comment rules" are be civil -- no personal attacks -- and no advertising. (See the full comment policy here). Opinion and debate are welcome, but attack the idea, not the person.

Jay I love these videos. I saw the blog one yesterday and love the simple explainantion. I hadn't seen the RSS one and can think of several people who I need to send it to. Thanks for grouping these together. - Ashley

Jay,

I find it hilarious how well they presented each of these explanations!!

I know who/what I'm referencing the next time someone asks me about an rss feed.

Jay,

I was still fuzzy on "wiki's" - that was a great explanation and tutorial - thanks for sharing these - those guys have the gift when it comes to explaining all the "technology" in plain english! - Cyndee Haydon

Hi Jay-

I'm amazed at how well the folks at Common Cfrat can explain these concepts in 'plain english'. I've sent numerous people the links to these videos. I wish they were around in 2005 when I was trying to explain to the other agents in my office (of course in long & rambling form) how the web was evolving and what was becoming a reality as a result of it.

Jay. The fact that you mentioned wiki I thought you would be interested to hear about a great new wiki that was launched for the real estate industry. Check out http://www.realestatewiki.com. It is still in beta but already has a lot of info.
