Spring Training 2009 – It’s almost here! Get your schedule!

Ahhh, Spring Training. It’s a baseball experience like no other. Cheap(er) tickets, players jogging on the warning path during the game, idyllic Phoenix weather. And it’s romantic! Francy and I had our first date at a Spring Training game. Whoda thunk 19 years after that Brewers vs. Cubs game we’d be married with two teenagers?

There are several Major League Baseball teams with spring training camps based in Phoenix that call the Cactus League home – the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Anaheim Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A’s, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, and San Francisco Giants. Other teams are based in Tucson and frequently play in Phoenix such as the Diamondbacks, White Sox (Whoops, they moved to Phoenix this year. Thanks Michael!), and Rockies.

There are a lot of games held in the Cactus League. “Split Squad” games are not uncommon. Teams split in half and play separately which is why on schedules you’ll occasionally see the same team playing two games, sometimes at the same time. (These split squad games are usually designated “ss” on schedules.)

If you’ve never been to a Spring Training game, you’re missing out on  a real treat. Trust me, just do it. You may wind up with a wife and two kids!

Speaking of AZHardball.com, my friend Paul Martinez runs that amazing blog site. If there is anything you want to know about baseball in Arizona, look no further than AZHardball. Seriously, it’s that good.

Spring training used to be dominated by central and south Florida. I see more and more teams migrating to Arizona. Can't blame them as Arizona really is more of a Sunshine State than Florida. Have you ever been to Disney World in the spring or summer? Bring an umbrella...

@Michael - I'd forgotten the Sox moved up here!

@Ryan - there are lots of folks that basically move here for the month of March just for Spring Training.

@AZHardbal - you're more than welcome! Your site rocks!

@Matt - I didn't make any games last year. This year will be different!

Hoping to get to see my Cubs this year!

Maybe I'll see you at a game this spring???

Thanks for the wonderful coverage. The story of your first date with your wive never get old. :)

I hope that you enjoy the schedule and this Cactus League Season.

My dad goes down to Peoria every year to watch the Mariners spring training. I think he ends up watching more live spring training games than regular season games. We all love the greater Phoenix area.

Please have a lot of Phillies coverage this year.

BaseBall is awesome and spring training is even more awesome. It seems like your first experience with it was an amazing one and you have now taken it up on yourself to provide the schedule. Great work! keep it going.

Spring is the favorite month of all who are fun and nature lovers. In the month of spring only every one likes to go for a long drive and have fun.

Spring Training is one of the best times of the year by a long ways. In Tucson we have 2 teams Diamondbacks and Rockies. I will say (to be honest) Phoenix area seems to be taking over as the White Sox moved up there this year and the Rockies and DB's are talking of making the switch however for the time being Spring Training is alive here in Tucson.

Hoping to get to see my Cubs this year!
