Pat the Chess Dad! Looks like we were both in Nashville for the 2003 National Elementary Championships! Your son was in the K-3 section, my son was in 4th grade at the time, playing in the K - 6. He was pretty much done by the 6th grade. The last national he played in was the Jr High's in Tucson in 2004 (as a 6th grader). Looks like mine "semi-retired" a year or two before yours did. My son was *really* into blitz, a game I could never play well. He was actually a better blitz player than he was with normal time controls.

I was a TD in the 2003 Elem Nationals in your son's section. Who knows, I may well have have had to resolve a "HE TOUCHED THAT PIECE!" claim for your little guy.

Small world, isn't it?

Jay the Chess Dad! My son also played the "circuit" and we were attending two nationals per year between 2003-05, and calling them vacations (they all seemed to be on the East Coast or Nashville)... look us up in the USCF database... he's already semi-retired pursuing other interests, all before hitting his teens!

No wonder we look at the world similarly... our sons retire about the same age (mine is now into piano and music) ... and both are good blitz players. One reason my son tapered off was because he couldn't sit still for those longer games... as he grew older, others who could sit still would start to outcalculate him. Some day look forward to meeting up with you Jay...

Jay - looks like we have some things in common. I've jumped out of a perfectly good airplane 62 times. I have a daughter who will turn 13 in a month. I had a 4.0 in college - for one semester! My Point2 website ranks #1 in Google (for one term...)!

Thanks John. I can't take credit for the kids stuff, they take after their mother.

Mary, my kids are 13 and 15 and deep in the throes of teenagerism. I can't handle another one! But I do strongly encourage kids to learn to play chess. It's great for their brains and *really* helps them learn problem solving skills. Some of the kids are amazing players. There is nothing quit as humbling as getting crushed in an intellectual game by a six year old. James doesn't play competitively any more (it's not "cool"), but he still enjoys trouncing his father every now and then.

I'm so glad this meme thing took off. Now I have all the dirt on real estate bloggers. Jay, you are an amazing person and I'll be sending my son to you in about a year for his chess lessons. Feel free to return him when he hits 18.
