The Real Estate Blog Shitstorm of 2007 and Video of the Week #9

in Marketing, Video of the Week

First, I apologize to those reading here that don’t regularly read real estate blogs (more on that in an upcoming post). You may just want to skip over this, though if you have any interest in human nature/interaction, it could be of some interest.

Earlier this week, Daniel Rothamel, a bright young real estate agent in Charlottesville, VA (the city of my birth incidentally — and that matters not one iota) posted a video on his blog titled, “How to Sell Your Home in Black and White“.

This video swiftly caught the attention of numerous real estate bloggers, with reactions ranging from “brilliant” and “genius” to “terrible” and “pandering and condescending, insulting to consumers” – and everything in between. Hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. For the record (and I left this in a comment on some blog somewhere), my initial reaction to the video was “Eh”. I didn’t think it was either good nor bad. The production was of good quality, the message (price your home properly) was spot on, but the video — to me — was just what it was. I didn’t find it funny, nor did I find it offending. I can see valid points in both sides opinions.

A veritable shitstorm was let loose as verbal thrashings began primarily between Greg Swann at BloodhoundBlog and a few contributors at AgentGenius. I won’t rehash any of it here, because to be blunt, I’m tired of it. If you’re really curious, go to either of those blogs — there are several recent posts on both as well as volumes of comments and ping backs to other blogs reactions.

Now given the brouhaha over Daniel’s video, you may be thinking that is my choice for Video of the Week. (Yeah, I know, I’ve already posted this weeks Video of the Week. Well, this week you get two — blogger’s prerogative!)

But no! Here is the video of the week….

Mariana Wagner just released her own video about an hour ago in response to the “debacle” (her word, and a good one – probably better than my more colorful choice).

I’m in the press box at Glendale Arena and people are trying to figure out why I’m laughing so hard.

But I still might not stop … :-)

JD – aren’t you supposed to be covering a game, not cruising the internet?

I pretty much saw the video the way you did Jay and wondered if I missed something. No, it was only Greg up to his old linkbaiting schemes, trying to bring traffic to all, just like a good Santa. As far as shitstorms go, this was a mild one. I think Bubblegate and Weeniegate were much shittier.

Don’t worry Mariana.. The posts leave the front pages and all that remains are the fond memories.

Jay,
I’m pretty neutral on the video too.

It was an accurate message to sellers, but as stated it was kind of a tongue in check jab at the sellers too. I guess Realtor humor, so that makes me agree with Greg in that while the video would be entertaining to the 1, it probably would not to the ninety and nine. I guess it’s just a matter of whether the video was meant to humor the 1 or educate the ninety and nine. I believe it is more the former than the latter and can also see how some of the latter that may have made bad decisions could be offended.

I think the follow up video was just as much fun for the 1’s and I really liked the Sharpie disclosure!

I think both of these folks understand viral pretty well!
