The TPREG Forum: Blogsperiment #7,943a

Update: the Forum has been removed. Blame it on the spammers. Details here. Sorry!

I’m a forum junkie, have been since the old Bulletin Board and Compuserve days.

Forums can provide a lot of interaction, similar – yet different – than blog comments. And I love interaction. Often the format of a forum is better for back and forth exchanges.

So enter The Phoenix Real Estate Guy Forum. You can find it by going to the navigation bar under the header graphic, or just click here to enter the forum (see update at top of post).

Honestly, I have no idea if this thing will ever gain any traction. If it does, it’ll stay. If it doesn’t, it won’t. It is really yet another blog experiment (happens a lot around here, thanks for bearing with me).

Good idea? Stupid? I don’t know, you tell me. I don’t recall seeing a forum integrated into a real estate blog. Surely someone has tried it. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think.

TPREG Forum Screen Shot

The forum runs SimplePress, a WordPress plugin. I’ve customized some of the CSS to make it match the blog styling. No question it will be evolving over the coming weeks.

I'm a real estate broker in Phoenix, Arizona and the publisher of the Phoenix Real Estate Guy blog. I tend to drive too fast and scream at the University of Texas and Denver Broncos football teams. My two kids are smarter than most adults I know and my wife is simply amazing.

We always appreciate your comments! Phoenix Real Estate Guy uses two commenting systems, Facebook and LiveFyre. LiveFyre is the most robust system (and easy to use!). It allows you to login with Twitter, Facebook, Google+ LinkedIn, OpenId, LiveFyre and as a "Guest". I recommend getting a LiveFyre account, it has some great features (just click the LiveFyre button when you write your comment).

BLOG COMMENT POLICY: We respectfully ask that you use your real name (first name only is fine) and not use keywords (Why no keywords?). The only real "comment rules" are be civil -- no personal attacks -- and no advertising. (See the full comment policy here). Opinion and debate are welcome, but attack the idea, not the person.

We are new to forums. We have been commenting on the house price crash forum here in the UK. It's a good way to get an objective view of the subject in qhestion and meet people who are concerned withy the same issues

How is your forum going? I have not done a lot of forum participation before so I don't know much about them; but I see there is some activity going on for you so far; very nice!

Interesting idea. I had thought about it in the past, but decided that I really don't have that kind of following so dropped it. Keep us updated on how it works.

Forums are a great place for back and forth discussion; great idea to start one on TPREG! I'm sure the local topics will get a lot of vistors looking for additional area information.

The forum looks nice! I think its a good idea because after time you can get a bigger following on the forum and that can become a nice resource for people looking for discussion on Phoenix Real Estate specifically.

What a great idea to start a forum on here! You will have to let us know as it starts to take off; I'm sure all the local readers are loving the back and forth conversation they can hold more easily on the forum.

I think it will go very well for getting some local back and forth conversation going! You will have to let us know how it goes or if you have any non local real estate topics on there to discuss; I enjoy the back and forth conversations that forums provide as well.

You never cease to amaze me Jay! Another new project... WOW! Where do you find the time?

I'll make sure and bookmark it so I can "pop in" from time to time and see how it is coming along.

As always, I wish the best of luck to you with your newest venture!

Best of Luck Jay! I tried hosting a forum early in my blogging career and quickly became overrun by spam, so be sure to put a good spam blocker in place. It's a big time commitment, but you have such a great following I'm sure you'll do well.

I like forum ideas. There are some good ones out there and you have a perfect following to justify its creation. Good luck with it.

Perhaps invite FSBOs to post their properties on the forum. A large percentage will eventually end up using a Realtor and perhaps some of them will remember your help when the time comes to choose a Realtor.

(There might be some agency problems, however.)

Very cool Jay. Forums can be hard to get rolling, but blogs can be too. As successful as your blog is I imagine that your forum will do well. I look forward to checking it out down the road.

I gave the forum shot an idea a year or so ago at Philadelphiarealestatehub.com. Good traffic to the site, but it didn't really take. But to be fair, it wasn't too thoroughly promoted.

And of course, we didn't have the following from both agents and consumers the tpreg has, so if anyone can get it done it's probably you :)

Otherwise, I'm loving the P2 Wordpress theme on HeyCentralPa.Com. It's twitter like front end lends itself nicely to a forum feel... I'm thinking a juicy tag cloud in the side bar might be a little more user friendly than that old school forum feel....

Will head over to the forum now to see if it follows :)

I'll be interested to see a follow up post in a month or so regarding your forum. I've heard the idea of adding a forum to a real estate website before, but the consensus has always been managing one is a time suck. I'll check out your forum and see how things are going. :)

I am sure it will do well, my only advice is to find some good moderators. It can be a lot of work running a forum especially if it's very busy.

I thought about adding a forum when I first set up my website in November 2007, but I let myself get talked out of it. I'll be keeping an eye on this experiment. If it gains traction, I'll give it a whirl too.

I agree, the forum has a really nice, easy to read and follow look; great job! I would bet it will be great for people looking to have back and forth discussions on localized, specific area info.-fantiastic idea.

Forums are great for sharing ideas and knowledge and experiences. If you can learn from someone elses mistakes and avoid them youself then you are ahead of the game. I will have to keep an eye on them.
