Upgrading Wordpress…

I’m about to upgrade to the latest Wordpress version.

If you hear loud cursing coming from the general Phoenix area, you’ll know what happend…

Upgrading WP is always….. Interesting…..

Ugh. Anyone know what this means?

WordPress database error: [Table 'jaygt.wp_terms' doesn't exist]
SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (’category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (500, 499, 498, 495, 494, 493, 492, 491, 490, 489, 488, 487) ORDER BY t.name ASC

UPDATE:
Whew…. that was 45 minutes of sheer panic. Who knows what caused the above error. I had to go into the SQL database and force it to upgrade again. Requires using phpMyAdmin, which just sends chills down my spine as it’s *really* easy to implode the blog.

Everything seems to be in order though. Let me know if you see something goofy…. Sidebars may be wonky for a little while…

Just testing that comments work after the upgrade….

“Anyone know what this means?”

Yes, the error means what it says in parenthesis: “[Table ‘jaygt.wp_terms’ doesn’t exist]”

The table in the database that was queried didn’t exist. In WP 2.3 the category structure was changed in favor of adding tags. If you use plugins that reference categories instead of terms in wp 2.3, there will be problems.

Jay when I upgraded I found 3 or 4 plugins that needed upgrading, if they were on I would have problems. I had to go through and turn them on one at a time and see which ones were compatible. It will probably take time for the geeks to catch up with us.

There was an issue when I left that last comment. I’ll leave this one and copy/paste in the next one. Never mind it seemed to fix itself on this one.

I got the error mentioned with NO plugins activated. Forcing the DB to upgrade again (thanks to a post on the WP.org forum for that tip!) fixed it.

I’m installing the plugins one-by-one right now. I do like the new 2.3 feature that shows when an upgraded plugin is available!

YOu have to love that about WordPress, they keep coming up with new ideas that makes a good product even better. If only Microsoft could duplicate that….

I’ll let you guys work out all the kinks before I start looking into a wordpress blog. Kind of like the first year model of a new car. :)

Right now I’m with Jonathan. But with you and Dave paving the way, I may try to upgrade my personal blog and see how it goes.

Barry: “I’ll let you guys work out all the kinks before I start looking into a wordpress blog. Kind of like the first year model of a new car.”

Don’t wait Barry, or it’ll never happen! Wordpress is a solid platform, constantly evolving. It can be a little tricky to get going initially, but after that it runs very well…

Steve - I’m usually 2 or 3 rev’s behind. I don’t see the point in doing every single upgrade. I’m a plugin hound and liked the new feature of WP telling you when a plugin is updated. That’s about the only reason I upgraded…

OK, Now that I’ve decided I need a new template, my question is: Do you recommend upgrading WordPress first or getting a new template stabilized and going at it?

13 Jay - The Phoenix Real Estate Guy 10.09.07 at 9:24 am

Hi Dru!

It probably doesn’t really matter. Most (but not all) templates should be compatible with v2.3. It’s possible you could select one though that isn’t, so it could possibly be simpler to upgrade first, then chose a template.

Everything looks fine to me, but I’ve only just spent most of yesterday setting up a Wordpress.org blog. I decided it was time to take the plunge, and much like you, I love a good technology grudge match.

I readily admit, I almost surrendered, but I stuck through it. I hate shameless plugs but, if you had a speck of a moment, I’d love any feedback (www.vaughanblog.com). Content is very rudimentary at this point as I’ve focussed on structure only.

Nice to talk to you and keep up the inspiring work.
