Win a Copy of Seth Godin’s “Tribes”

UPDATE: Now with twice the chance of winning! (see below)

TribesIt’s no secret that I’m a Seth Godin fan. Judging by the number of books he sells, the sold-out appearances and the general buzz about Seth, I am far from alone.

Seth has a new book out called “Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us”. Many weeks ago I pre-ordered the book, joined Seth’s Triiibes.com social network site and waited for the book to be released.

In a move that isn’t all that surprising (given Godin’s outside the box marketing skills), a copy of Tribes arrived in my mail before the book was released. It was a free advanced copy. An included letter said:

Here’s an advance copy of Tribes. An early copy, for you, before anyone else gets one. Please read it and keep it. And when the one you paid for comes, I hope you’ll give that one away. In two weeks or so, when it arrives from the bookseller, take that second copy and spread the word. If all you do is file it away, I’ve failed.

So give it away is exactly what I’m doing.

Leave a comment on this post. It doesn’t have to be profound and deep. It doesn’t have to suck up, and it doesn’t have to convince me to pick you to get the free copy of Tribes. Next Saturday (Oct 25) Sunday, Oct 26 (my daughter wants to pick the winner and she’ll be back from a band competition on Sunday) at noon Arizona time, I’ll put the names of all who comment on this post in a hat and draw one. That person will get a copy of Tribes, on me and Seth Godin.

There is only one rule. You can’t keep it. Read it, add your name in the front inside cover and pass it on. Give it away however you want, but you have to give it away.

It doesn’t get any easier than this folks. Simply leave a comment and next Sunday a copy of Tribes could be jetting its way toward you. I’m half-way through and find the book very thought provoking. I’m sure you will too.

Update: And now, thanks to the generosity of Wayne & Pat Harriman, Realtors and runners of the wonderful Wallingford Wired weblog (how do you like that alliteration!) your chances of winning just doubled!. Wayne (quite possibly without Pat’s permission) has offered up their extra copy of Tribes to give away. So we’ll be giving away not one but TWO copies by random drawing! Thanks Pat & Wayne! (and I hear others may soon run similar contests…)

the contest's concept is inspiring... thanks

Some good information offered in this posting, and I'm going to look into the 'Tribes' title.

Thank you, that is very informative. So I am right to say that social networking is more of gathering a group of individuals with the same interests to form a community.
:D

I also won a copy and will be glad to pass it on to someone who posted here. I will have to figure out who to send it to next. :)

Hi all, I just got to see the drawing Jay and his daughter conducted, and even though I already knew the outcome, it was exciting nonetheless. I'll do as commanded and give it away when I'm done reading it. I think I'll invent some semi-coherant formula to give it to another entrant on this comment thread. Yipeee!!

I was too late to the party. Maybe the winning will pass it on to me...Lol

OK folks, it's noon in sunny Arizona. Entries are now closed. I'll be videotaping the drawing and will post the winners as soon as I get it processed and uploaded!

Thanks for playing, stay tuned!

Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!! I haven't won anything since I sent that postcard in to the radio station in 7th grade and won a Chicago album. Please pick me. That was a VERY long time ago. :)

Hope your daughter does well at her band competition!!! My son is on color guard, both in high school and with the Madison Scouts.

I'm definitely a Seth Godin fan as well... would love to read the book and pass it on!

Seth Rocks! I am a huge fan of passing it forward... Most good books I've read, I've sent on to some other random person on my contact list. In several occasions, I've had another copy of the book land in my lap.

Great Idea, Jay!

Love your website! Well done! Lots of nice little bits and bobs that make it something to return to! Great job. PS found you on Twitter - You just have to love social networking!

Cheers!

I thought Seth Grodin was a musician, he's not?!?!? Oh, well, if I'm lucky enough to have my name pulled, I'll learn all about him, won't I. And I'll pass it on thru my AR blog.

Sounds like Seth. Count me in. Have a great weekend & wish your daughter the best in her band competition!

I would like to be counted in, but being from europe i think you dont want to spend your months income on the extremely high postage fees.

I just wanted to tell you that i am a big fan of seth godin as well. He gave me some very good ideas. Of course making the ideas reality is always the hard part.

Hi,

Now that is really cool example of generosity, and what a fine example of marketing for Seth. When you think about it, its tough to buy the “buzz” that something unexpectedly free creates. My hat is off to him, yet again!

Your rule about not keeping it continues the generosity started by Seth. Nice one!

Great idea!!! Jeff Turner gave me his copy of "Tribes" a couple of days ago ... I have read it an passed it on! It is a very good book.

What a cool way to pay it forward! Count me in please!

Just for the record, I did, indeed, make a unilateral decision to part with our second copy of Tribes, unbeknownst to my Better Half. However, being the kind, gentle, giving soul that she is, I'm sure I will be suitably rewarded for this selfless and altruistic act of generosity.

At least, that's what I'm counting on...

I'm beginning to feel like I'm the only person alive who doesn't know anything about Seth other than his name! With all this buzz, I am thinking I'm missing out and, whether I win or not... I will look for his book and read it. His marketing technique obviously worked so I am extra curious to dig into the pages now!

I love your blog giveaway idea and think it would be awesome to see the winner read it, put their name on it, post it on their blog , and give it away as a tradition you've started. I promise to do just that should I get my hands on one of THE copies you're offering. (I also promise to rush read it - and then buy a copy to keep - as I suspect it's going to be great!)

Jay, if you ship it to me on the 27th it will be here just in time for my birthday!

That was a really cool gesture and marketing technique that Seth thought of. Exactly why I need to read his book.

I'm always up for an inspiring read. Toss my name in the hat please.

Thanks also for the info on the commentluv plugin you've got on your site. I've got a designer in the process of setting me up with a new site on Wordpress, and I just emailed the link to him. Maybe I'll get a comment or two with the new site and this plug-in.

My copy still hasn’t arrived but I listened to part of the audio book last night.
<a title="Seth Godin's Blog" href="http://tinyurl.com/sethstrategy">S... makes great insights with this topic. It reminds me of the strategy used by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan during the build up to the most successful tribal movements we’ve witnessed. The Million Man March.

That's a kind offer of you, I do love Seth Godin and think what you're doing with giving away a copy of his book is great.

I was just starting to think I knew Seth's shtick, viral marketing by being remarkable. But here he takes that one idea and applies it in a completely different new way. I guess he still has a lot I can learn from.

Hmmmmm, 57 people wanting one Seth Godin book :). OK, I too am a member of Triiibes and will run a similar raffle on my site. You see, I too must pay the book forward. So y'all will get a 2nd chance for a copy of Triiibes. Will put the post up in a day or two.

Great idea Jay.

Seth Who? Why is a book called Tribes important to an "independent" real estate agent? Sounds like a Jonathan Seagull thing to me, but that bird was free - I mean "independent". Good Luck to everyone.

I hope that I get picked!!!
