Hi, you might not know me so let me introduce myself, Teresa Boardman of The St. Paul Real Estate Blog. - yah you betcha!
What a surprise, you have come here to read a little real estate news, which is usually best if it is local and you maybe thought you would find some information about Phoenix AZ. There is plenty of information here so you came to the right blog, and if you work with Jay Thompson you picked the right REALTOR, and who knows you might even be on the right post. I have come here all the way from St. Paul, Minnesota to write on Jay’s most excellent Blog.
St. Paul is the other city in Minnesota, right next door to Minneapolis, which is bigger but we are older, wiser, and are the capital of Minnesota. We get kind of testy when the news media calls us “Minneapolis/St. Paul. Most people think that the 2008 republican national convention will be held in Minneapolis, the convention is actually being held a few blocks from my own home near downtown. I plan to sell St. Paul re blog t-shirts, and of course houses to convention attendees.
As I traveled through cyber space from St. Paul to Phoenix, past all of those bits and bytes on servers around the country, I decided that I should convince you all to list your home with Jay and move to Minnesota, and of course I would be happy to find you a home here. We have plenty on the market to choose from. Living here is about lakes, parks and of course the Mississippi River. We really are a river town and considered to be the last big city of the East. We have jobs, housing, an excellent school system, and of course the University of Minnesota.
As of year-end 2002, Minnesota’s homeownership rate of 77 percent was the highest in the country.
Here is some information about our fair city from the U.S. Census bureau, 2005 American Community Survey.
Our population is 287,151 people, 112,109 households, and 60,987 families residing in the city, I don’t know them all but am sure they are nice people.
The median rent in Saint Paul is $732, which is for a one bedroom unit. The median mortgage is $1,361, which is for a house with 2 bedrooms and 5 rooms total.
There are 107,979 total occupied housing units in Saint Paul, of which 63,609 are owner occupied (59%). 7,045 of these housing units are people who have lived there since before 1970. The median year moved into the unit is 2000.
14,407 (13%) of these housing units do not have a vehicle of any kind. The median number of vehicles per household is one.
Median value for owner-occupied units is $200k, with 327 of them worth $1 million or more.
Oh, and as for that non-home related stuff? Well, the median age is 33 years, and we’re 66% white. 34,183 (32%) of all households have at least one person under 18 years old. Median household income is $44,103.

2Wow Teresa, now you’ve got me thinking…Phoenix or St Paul?
While it may be a bit warmer in AZ I like the idea of only 287,150 other people in the whole city. I think that’s the approximate number of my condo association. I’m definitely going to visit—in the summer.

5Wow Teresa, with those type of stats I’m assuming that you don’t have an issue with traffic. One car per household!! Who would have thought. Soak up that great AZ sun while you’re there before heading back home. Good job!

6Great post Teresa. Soak up that AZ sun while you can before heading back home. Interesting Minnesota stats…I take it you don’t have traffic congestion with ownership of only 1 car. This year I lost one of my special clients to Minnesota and wish I had known you at the time.

7Gena,
We have traffic congestion big time. Infact I have to plan my schedule around hockey games downtown, so I can get home. Congestion and commute times are going up, life is no different here in that regard than it is anywhere else. But I think everyone should move here anyway.
Larry - thanks!

11How funny…I just now realized the match-up…Phoenix vs. St. Paul. Desert heat vs. Arctic cold! OK, so I’m slow on the uptake. One thing in your favor, you have Garrison Keillor.
